The School Dilemma

How do you decide where to send your child to school? The local public school, where the neighborhood kids go? Or private Christian school where you know they will get some good Bible teaching? Or maybe Homeschool, where you tailor the education to fit each one of your children? There are benefits to each type of educational environment and I wanted to share a few.

school dilemma

This past school year, all of my children have been in different school settings. My oldest, Amberly, is attending a Private Christian High School. My middle, Jonah, is homeschooled. And my youngest, Benjamin, is attending our local public elementary school.

I think it is important to take the child into consideration when choosing the education. All of the kids are different and have a variety of needs. And I think it’s also important that we don’t worry about what other people will think of our schooling choice.

Does God care where we send our children to school?  On one level, yes, because He loves us and our children. But on another level, no. God cares that we raise our children to know Him and love Him and obey Him. He cares that we teach them his commandments and how to live like Jesus. I would argue that we can do these things while sending our children to any type of school. What matters is our hearts. And their hearts. God will be the guide to help each of us decide what is best for each of our children as the years go by.

Schooling is not a decision to be taken lightly. It will have an influence on our kids’ hearts and minds. They will spend a lot of time at school, surrounded by teachers and children with varied world views. It is important that we prayerfully consider the options for each of our children, and ask God to direct us to the best place for them to grow and thrive and become the people who He has created them to be.

And, we must stop the judgement. We as Christian sisters should not try to impose our education choices on others. We each have our own relationship with God and can cooperate with Him in deciding what is best for our children. We should bless and encourage each other in whatever path that God leads us to follow. We ought to build up, not tear down.

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.  Matthew 1:1-2
